    HISTORY
    In 2013, the plastic gear in my kids’ Model 19 Pencil Sharpener broke in
    half and lost some of its teeth.  Having
    recently purchased a 3D Printer and looking for a meaningful project, I set out
    to reverse engineer the broken gear.  Knowing
    that the reason for the gear breaking over time is its close proximity to the
    drive motor and its exposure to constant heat, I decided to improve upon the original
    gear design.
    IMPROVED DESIGN & MATERIAL
    The following improvements are incorporated to the
    design
    of the
    new gear:
    -Spokes that double as Fan blades to blow some air on the motor and cool the chamber.
    -Lighter yet sturdy gear with the spoke design compared to the
    original.  This lessens the load on the
    aging motor in spinning the gear, increasing its life.
    -Symmetrical Gear that produces very little vibration as the inertia of
    the gear is distributed evenly.  Compared
    to similar gears in the market, the fan blades are spread out evenly (no heavy
    side).  Unevenness in a rotating gear will
    add vibration wherever the heavy part of the gear is at when it’s spinning.
    -PETG plastic – same durable plastic used heavily in drink bottles food safe containers.  It’s now readily available and affordable which makes for the price of this gear very competitive.
    PROVEN & TESTED
    The new and improved gear has been working well on our Model 19 for since
    2013 and has sharpened numerous graphite and coloured pencils.  I
    have a video of this gear in operation; please contact me if you would like to
    see it.  Each gear is batch tested to fit
    in our Model 18/19
    INSTALLATION
    The additional images in this listing show the sequential
    removal/installation of the sharpener gear. 
    Once the old gear is removed, orient the new gear the same way as the
    original (round hole first) then simply slide the new gear into the slot. It
    should be a sliding snug fit.  The
    original Model 18 and 19 sharpener gears are snug fit and do not require a
    hairpin clip and this gear is designed to install the same way.
    This gear will NOT fit in a Model 17 as that model requires a smaller
    gear.  I am also selling that gear on another listing.
